Meadows and Trees

Follow Route A along the sequence of water meadows that accompany the Beck upstream to the Minster and beyond. They are usually grazed out by our herd of naturally polled British White cattle (above) - a rare historic breed once typical of parks and monasteries - as well Simmental cows.

There are a number of veteran trees along the Beck, notably oaks and pollarded hornbeams (above) which may be up to 500 years old. These were once a common feature of the 'wood pasture' of a medieval deer park. If you would prefer to avoid the cows - perhaps if you have a dog - an alternative to Route A runs parrallel behind a hedge, skirting the new Minster Wood (planted in 1999)
