South Elmham Hall and Bateman's Barn

The 16th century exterior of the Grade 1 listed farmhouse hides a medieval first floor hall where the Bishop of Norwich held court and entertained. Many features survive, including probably the earliest domestic wall paintings in Suffolk. The moated enclosure (above), which may be older than the Hall, also contains a ruined gatehouse from the medieval establishment of the Bishop of Norwich.

The Hall and gardens are open for guided tours on Thursdays, some Sundays and on Bank Holidays from 1st May - 30th September. Paths A and C lead from the car park next to Bateman's Barn Visitors Centre and Cafe (above) via the Groves old oak, ash and beech trees, to the footbridge across the moat. Here you may see sedge warblers as well as mallard ducks and you are likely to hear the green or greater spotted woodpeckers. In the evening noctule bats that roos in the beech trees come out to hunt in the Grove
